Birds are one of my students' favorite things to paint, and they are more beginner friendly than they look. This Backyard Birds Watercolor Template Kit has four of the birds I see most: a House Finch, a Black Capped Chickadee, an Oak Titmouse, and a Northern Cardinal. The first three are beginner projects, and the Cardinal is a step up to intermediate. The drawing is already done for you, so you can go straight to the fun part. Follow the step-by-step instructions to practice layering washes and using an almost dry brush to paint feathery texture. Or, set the instructions aside and paint your birds looser, with more water, just suggesting the areas of color. Change the season with your background: spring blossoms, summer greens, autumn leaves, or a cool winter sky. Every time you paint you have the opportunity to learn something new and have fun! Matte your favorite painting with the included matte. Save the plastic sleeve to display your painting if you choose.
